Model reasoning

Anthropic's sales are rising very fast: about $11.5 billion last spring quarter and on pace for over $100 billion a year by December. The hurdle needs a $200 billion yearly pace, and a planned November stock listing would make the company publish quarterly results. Its first $50 billion quarter most likely comes in late 2027 or 2028, with OpenAI a later backup. Anthropic's growth slowing sharply, or its listing being delayed for years, would most change this.

Where things stand (14 Oct 2026)

Nothing qualifying has been published yet, and nothing can be until a quarter that ends after 7 Oct 2026 has closed. The earliest eligible quarter is Q4 2026, and its results would come out around February–March 2027. So the question really asks two things: when will either company's revenue first reach $200B a year averaged over a whole quarter, and when will that number appear in a public filing?

Anthropic is the main path.

  • Reported revenue so far:
    • 2025: about $4.6B, from the leaked draft prospectus reported by Reuters and Fortune on 28–29 Sep 2026.
    • Q1 2026: $4.73B.
    • Q2 2026: more than $11.5B, preliminary (CNBC/Bloomberg, 15 Aug 2026).
  • Annualised pace (run rate):
    • About $9B at the end of 2025.
    • $30B in early April 2026.
    • $47B in May.
    • $65B at the end of July (CNBC, 17 Aug).
    • The New York Times, CNBC and Bloomberg say the company expects more than $100B by the end of 2026. That implies growth has slowed to about 9–12% a month, from about 45% a month in the spring.
  • Company projection: Anthropic has told investors to expect $190–200B of revenue in 2028 (Reuters, 14 Aug). Read literally, that puts its first $50B quarter around Q3 2028. But the company has beaten its own forecasts by wide margins: in January 2026 its internal forecast for all of 2026 was up to $18B, and actual 2026 revenue now looks like about $55–60B.
  • Accounting basis: Anthropic counts cloud-marketplace sales at their full (gross) value. Those sales were 47% of 2025 revenue, with about $351M of partner fees booked as an expense (PitchBook via Morningstar). The question uses whatever basis the company's own statements use, so this helps a YES.
  • IPO and reporting: Anthropic filed confidentially on 1 June. The public prospectus is expected around 23 Oct, ahead of a planned Nasdaq listing before Thanksgiving (Bloomberg/FinanceFeeds). Polymarket gives about 68% for trading by 31 Dec 2026. Once listed, it must publish quarterly results within about 45 days, so each quarter's figure appears in the following calendar quarter.
  • Capacity: Anthropic is short of computing power but has signed for a great deal more: $518B of commitments and about 14.8 GW of new capacity, much of it arriving in 2027.

OpenAI is a second, later path.

  • It counts cloud-partner sales only at its own share (net basis). Q1 2026 revenue was $5.7B and Q2 was $6.7B (WSJ). Its annualised pace was about $50B in September, and it targets $70B or more by year-end (FT/Reuters, 8–9 Oct).
  • It projects $36B of revenue in 2026 rising to $350B in 2030 (FT via Tom's Hardware).
  • It has filed confidentially; the CFO says it will list in 2027, and Altman has said now would be an "ill-advised moment" to go public.

Method

I ran a Monte Carlo simulation of monthly revenue for both companies in the container:

  • Starting point: Anthropic's September 2026 revenue at about $6.8B a month; OpenAI's at about $4.2B.
  • Growth: monthly growth starts around 9–10% and fades by half every 4–28 months, down to a long-run floor of 0.3–3% a month.
  • Setbacks: a shared industry-wide shock (5% a year) and company-specific shocks (4% a year), each followed by a year of no growth.
  • Publication: a one-quarter reporting lag, plus uncertainty about when each company starts filing publicly.

Checks against outside figures:

  • Anthropic's end-2026 run rate comes out at a median of about $103B (10th–90th percentile range $84–128B).
  • Its May 2027 run rate comes out at a median of about $141B, close to FutureSearch's forecast of $138B (range $85–220B).
  • Its 2028 revenue comes out at a median of about $233B, against the company's $190–200B projection.

Results: Anthropic first reaches a $50B quarter by:

  • Q2 2027: about 13%
  • Q4 2027: about 42%
  • Q2 2028: about 61%
  • Q3 2031: about 87%

Adding OpenAI and the publication lag gives the series submitted. I trimmed the far tail by a few points for model risk. The implied chance of a first qualifying report peaks at about 20% per quarter from late 2027 through 2028, then declines.

Paths to YES and NO

YES: Anthropic keeps growing about 5–9% a month as the new 2027 capacity comes online, and crosses $50B in a quarter between Q3 2027 and Q2 2028. Its 10-Q or earnings release then resolves the question. A later route is OpenAI listing in 2027 and reaching $200B a year in 2029–30.

NO, or a later YES:

  • Growth fades faster than expected because of price cuts (OpenAI has cut prices 50%; Gemini 4; cheap open models) or customers rationing their AI budgets.
  • A downturn in AI spending or the wider economy (rising rates, oil above $100).
  • Safety-driven regulation.
  • The IPO is delayed, so nothing is published.

Strongest argument against my numbers: the company's own 2028 projection points to a first $50B quarter around Q3 2028. If it is accurate rather than conservative, my 2028 H1 figures (42–54%) are about 10–15 points too high. I partly offset this because of Anthropic's record of beating its forecasts and the 2027 capacity build-out.

Resolution criteria

Question. By the last day of each quarter, has OpenAI or Anthropic reported revenue of at least US$50 billion for a single completed fiscal quarter?

Definitions.

  • OpenAI or Anthropic: OpenAI Group PBC or Anthropic PBC, including their consolidated subsidiaries and any renamed or reorganized successor to the same business, including a holding company established to list that business. Either company must meet the threshold individually; their revenues cannot be added together. If acquired, separately reported revenue for the named business counts, but the acquiring parent's total revenue does not.
  • Revenue: the company's reported consolidated revenue or net sales recognized for the fiscal quarter, before expenses, in nominal US dollars. Use the financial-statement revenue figure, not gross transaction volume, bookings, funds raised, valuation, cash receipts, total addressable market, or a non-GAAP grossed-up alternative. Acquisition revenue included in the company's reported consolidated revenue counts; hypothetical pro forma revenue does not. If accounts are presented in another currency, use the US-dollar equivalent explicitly supplied by the company for that fiscal quarter; do not independently convert it.
  • Gross or net basis: use revenue on whichever basis the company's own financial statements recognize it for that quarter, including for sales through cloud platforms, resellers or other partners. Do not convert one company's figure to the other's basis or substitute a supplementary figure prepared on a different basis.
  • Fiscal quarter: a completed interim accounting period of three months, or of 13 or 14 weeks, that the company identifies as a quarter of its fiscal year. No quarterly figure may be estimated by dividing, averaging, or prorating a longer period.
  • Quarterly figure by subtraction: a quarter's revenue not stated directly counts as reported if it equals the difference between two cumulative revenue figures for the same fiscal year, both published by the company in qualifying sources on the same accounting basis, for periods differing by exactly that quarter; where a later document restates the earlier period, use the restated figure. No other derivation counts.
  • Threshold: at least US$50,000,000,000 in nominal dollars. An explicitly reported figure of $50 billion counts; “about,” “nearly,” or “approaching” $50 billion does not. A range counts only if its lower endpoint is at least $50 billion.

Resolves YES if a qualifying source reports at least US$50 billion in revenue for a completed fiscal quarter of either company, or publishes the later of two figures establishing such a quarter by subtraction. An official quarterly results announcement counts without waiting for an SEC filing, including results labelled preliminary or unaudited, as does a preliminary estimate or range for an ended quarter in a registration statement or prospectus; guidance does not. A subsequently published restatement that first meets the threshold counts on its publication date. The Observation period convention applies: the fiscal quarter must end after the opening date.

Resolves NO / Exclusions. Resolve NO at a horizon if no qualifying report has been published by that horizon. Annualised revenue, run rates, annual recurring revenue, a month's revenue multiplied by three, backlog or remaining performance obligations, forecasts, and targets do not count; nor do leaked documents, including drafts of a registration statement before they are made public on EDGAR, or confidential investor materials. Public listing is not required.

Resolving source. Company-authored public financial statements and quarterly or annual results announcements on openai.com, anthropic.com, or their official successor or investor-relations domains; or company financial disclosures filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on EDGAR, including Forms S-1 and its amendments, 424(b) prospectuses, 10-Q, 10-K, 8-K, F-1, 20-F, 6-K and their exhibits. A parent's filing may establish separately reported revenue for the named business. This is a company-reporting-only subset of Public confirmation (A2); third-party estimates and press reports do not independently resolve the question. Apply Resolution date (A3) using the public publication date, not a confidential submission date. Apply the Resolution window and Observation period conventions.
